Corn pest

I went out to my garden this morning and something had clipped 19 of my corn plants off at the base. The seeds were still in the ground and the plants were laying in the soil beside them. This is my second plating of corn and the plants were about 2" high. My first planting wasn't disturbed. Does anyone have any ideas of what could be doing this? I live in Ontario if this makes any difference.

Thanks.

Well there are a wide variety of animals that could be the culprits, deer are the first to come to mind though.

Do you have a fence around your garden? (For deer it needs to be at least 6 (better to be 8 feet high).

The ground was soft and there were no deer tracks around. And, no, I don't have a fence.

Try watiching your garden at night to see who comes by, also early in the morning.

galapas,

Possibly cutworms.

There may be other varieties that behave similarly.

I would say cutworms look like the culprit. Thanks for the info.
