When to plant shallot bulbs

I've harvested 3 shallots that grew as a bunch, from a single bulb. I intend to plant them individually to increase my stock; each should grow 3-4 more bulbs.

I don't know whether to put them straight back in the ground or hold them to plant at a later date. Advice welcome, esp. if based on experience :).

Haha, I just looked at the webpage of an Arkansas ag. professor. On the left column under "Culture - Planting" it says 'cloves in fall'. On the right, under "Cultural practices" it says 'February as soon as the soil can be tilled, will give best results'. YMMV??
