What's with the Peat Moss in everything?

Our local garden center changed from True Value to Ace. Mostly its good but I am noticing a lot of the Top Soil and Compost products are now labelled as mixes with Peat Moss. I know seed starter includes peat moss, but I don't remember it being that way for other things in years past. Perhaps I never noticed, or its just just new labeling.

My knee jerk reaction was they were diluting the products to lower cost, but I'm just the suspicious type.

Anyone know - is this something new? And is it good, bad. or indifferent?

Thanks

Bob

I mix my own dirt using Mel Bartholomew's method and 1/3 of it is peat moss. Helps with water retention.
