Why mow strawberries?

I see online advice about growing strawberries, including cutting them down to 1-2 inches in fall. I've never done this and wonder what the purpose is?

The big problem with strawberries Vanisle is that they are so prone to fungal problems.
By cutting them back at the end of the season it’s possible to remove all the old debris from the plant in the way of old leaves and desiccated material. So that the plant goes into the winter as clean as possible. New leaves will rapidly grow in the spring without the danger of old leaves passing on overwintering spores.

I am guessing you do the trimming after the plants go dormant, trim everything but the things that look like buds for new growth?

Maybe you don't have to be that careful? I see advice from people who literally mow the plants with a lawn mower.

Personally I've never had a strawberry mould problem (but never say never )
