Any beetles on them? Looks like Japanese beetle damage.

I did not see any beetles either. Can it be birds? I spotted some in am on a fence

Not birds -- they might be after what's doing the damage, which definitely looks like somethings are clinging to the leaf and munching away. Be sure to look at the underside of the leaves and try going out at night w flashlight if you don't see culprits during the day.

I think its more important to talk about the size of these containers. Cucumbers need big pots if trying to grow in containers. Ordinarily a few leaves here and there shouldn't be a big deal.

What variety are they?

I did grow cucumbers before in this containers, this is just a new location for me, since we moved. There are different varieties: boston pickling and some seeds from overseas (small pickling cucumbers)

The beetles come up from the soil around June and July. Most of them do their feeding between dusk and dawn so that is the time to go hunting.
