Mulching Question

So I have taken the advice from several of you on this forum and decided to do a mulching section in my garden. I put down 3 layers of newspaper, wetted them, then covered them with straw around all of my corn plants. My corn plants are roughly 4-5 inches tall currently. My only worry is that the straw may smother the corn out? I left about 5 inches around the plants with newspaper and also pulled the straw back from the plants, and plan on doing that as much as possible. I have attached some pics. Give me some feedback on the mulching job, and also any advice. Let me know what you think..

I think you're fine. As long as you don't cover the plants' leaves with anything, around them is great.

Looks good! Can't smother your corn unless it is piled over the top of it.

I do this every year to my whole garden and I love it. It adds to the soil year after year, and works very effectively to reduce weeds, and keep the soil from losing moisture. And it looks nice too!!

Thanks all for the responses! I plan on doing this to the rest of my garden this week!
