Barrel/Tower Garden

Hello!
My husband and I are really into repurposing materials and use th in the garden. So my husband bought two plastic barrels (for $15 each). And we wanted to turn 'em into tower gardens.

And it seamed like a good idea, but my mother told me that the veggies wouldnt grow in them (I wanted sweet peas, lettuce, cukes)

Anyone had any experiences with these? Or any suggestions?

Peas and cukes wouldn't do well because they get too tall for such a system. And in my opinion cukes would take too much water from the rest of the system.

My grandmother grew hen and chicks in a barrel like that. They were beautiful. I have a similar system in the works but it's not finished yet. Lettuce and smaller leafy greens would do well. A lot of annual or biennial herbs would do well. Strawberries are frequently grown that way.
