Any idea what this is?

I started my first garden a few months ago and this is growing wonderfully! Only I have no clue what it is! Can anyone help me identify this?

Far as I am concerned just a weed.

yep - Physalis sp., ground cherry of some sort. the ripe fruit of most is pretty tasty - it should be fully ripe though, or slightly toxic. when the husks go yellow and they fall from the plant, bring them inside...then wait a day. the flavor's better when they're fully ripe too.

Thank you!! How did it grow if I didn't plant it?

Like I said, its a weed. Did you ever need to plant weeds? They plant themselves.
They come on the wind. Here they come in the irrigation water.
Weeds are a fact of life.

OK, some like to eat them, however I have never had any taste for them. When
they show up in my garden, they go to the compost heap! They are closely
related to tomatoes and their culture is similar.

they volunteer readily. if you brought in any plants that were potted up elsewhere, that could be the culprit. these don't move around by wind.

when very ripe, they have a strawberry-with-hint-of-pineapple flavor. I just saw a local farm is selling them for $7/lb right now, and that's a wholesale price. I've easily gotten 4 or 5 dollars per pint. not too bad for a plant that frequently plants itself.

Thank you both for helping me figure this out! I will definitely wait until they ripen and try them to see if our family likes them. It's fantastic to be able to grow something so easily! I hope we like them!
