2nd ears of corn not developing

All my corn stalks did great and first ear from each stalk great, all other ears on every stalk did nothing, stayed small and not a single kernel developed. I planted 4 groups of corn, 2 weeks apart, all did them same. I did plenty of hand fertilizing (again all plants had first ears great and fully developed but no other ears did anything).

Kernels did not develop at all and had "dents" in them. Again I hand fertilized plenty (definitely not the problem).

Tons of bees too.

How close were they planted, if too close the 2nd ears will usually not develop. Don't plant any closer than the seed package says. The weather is also affect that if it suddenly turns too hot and they don't get enough water.
