Today we had a revelation; we have everything we need to build a cucumber trellis! And since today is memorial day, we couldn't think of a better way of staying away from the bustle and the crowds in town than to work on projects in our home.
We started by chopping down the browning bamboo stalks from the farthest reaches of our back yard. We have about a seven foot row of cucumbers, so we cut seven pieces of seven foot in length. Then we cut nine pieces that were seventy five inches for the vertical pieces, and spaced everything about ten inches apart. We tied the stalks together with twine and mounted the finished product to two posts we put in the ground. The posts were left over from some long ago project we were never here for. We'll post pictures as the cucumbers grow!
Were trying to find out why our photos were turned over after posting... :/ We'll try and fix them soon!

The pics will turn right way up when you click on them to zoom, so it's OK.
But for future reference, if you see this happen, rotate the picture in you're device (cell phone, tablet, ...I suppose computer too) EVEN IF THEY LOOK CORRECT -- rotate so it's upside down and save, then rotate again so it's right way up and save. Delete the previous image file that was uploaded and upload the double rotated image, and this time it will look correct.
In my experience, you'll need to guide the cucumber to use this kind of thick trellis. Have two tendrils "hold hands" with the support in the middle (or simply tie them on. One you get the initial vines going up, the others will use ose to climb on and once enough vines are holding on to each other, you won't need to help them out any more.
-- it's *easier* to just tie a few vertical and horizontal strings here and there for the first ones to climb on. Another way us to put some pole beans among them since the poke beans will climb the bamboo with no problem. THEN the cucumbers can hold onto the pole beans.
