The Bay Area is fabulous for growing fruits and vegetables. They say we have a Mediterranean climate here that, combined with our great soil, makes it easy to grow lots of produce.
The Bay Area is famous for it's microclimates, too. However you'll find that the range of stuff that can be grown here is often limited only by the seasons.
I have a friend in Oakland that grows in his large backyard: strawberries, blueberries, oranges, brocolli, asparagus, squash, pumpkins, lettuce, zucchini, tomatoes and artichoke. I'm pretty sure there's more I'm leaving out. He also has a bee hive from which he collects honey, and chickens for the eggs.
In San Francisco you can definitely grow the same range of veggies, and remember, raspberries and blackberries grow wild out there so it should be a snap getting those to grow, as well as plums, lemons, and avocado.
