Worms in my sweet potatoes

What are these worm things in my sweet potatoes? Most importantly, what can I do to prevent them? I live in Aiea, Hawaii; has anybody from around here encountered this? I'm sorry, I can't zoom in any closer. I hope you can see the photos clearly. Thank you!

Some of my sweet potatoes end up with similar marks due to wireworms (click beetle larvae). I can't see if you have one in the photo -- the ones that get in my sweet and regulat potatoes, carrots.... Are orange with tan segment lines and are hard (wire-like) and about 3/4 inch long.

I have to cut open any with black hole in it and follow the tunnels to cut them all out. I save the remaining good pieces of the potatoes and use them though. Diced sweet potatoes cooked in rice for example, or coated in oil and honey or maple syrup and baked. Since they are processed before curing, they aren't as sweet as they could/should be, but still tasty.
