Adding lime,unknown PH?

How did the old timers know how much lime to use when they did'nt have access to PH info? Say for tomatoes and general gardening. Always wondered about that and seems like this would be a good place to find out. Art

I have never heard that one but it makes sense. Those guys seemed to know lots of stuff that is now almost forgotten. Since they had to produce or go hungry in the winter they passed on those secrets it seems. Thanks, Art

My grandfather tasted the soil too. He said, lime will sweeten the soil.

Wood ash is loaded with lime. It is great for tomatoes and blossom end rot.

Pine needles and sulfur will make the soil acid.

It is possible to have alkaline soil that needs lime. Arizona has 8 ph soil and tomatoes have blossom end rot real bad without LIME.
