vegetable starts and wind damage

I am just getting back to vegetable gardening after many years. I planted my starts (from a store) this year when it was windy. I thought about fashioning some kind of protection but just hoped for the best. While they did survive the plants seem stunted. Does anyone else have this problem and what do you do to combat your wind problems? Thanks

I live in Alberta and yes I have wind issues here. the first thing I did was build my garden in a wind sheltered area but I am in town it is easier to do.

lots of plants like peppers tomatoes and any vines should have physical support. bamboo stakes, trellis ext...
