Very large Asparagus

What would cause Asparagus to be larger than normal in diameter. I am talking about one particular plant that shoots up stems that are over an inch across. They are not tasty. I keep thinking that it is just in really good conditions and eventually I will cut enough shoots off and they will be normal size.

As asparagus plants age the roots reach a good size and they can send up large shoots. Usually the tips are tasty. Just keep cutting it and as the season progresses the shoots become smaller. I cut everything that comes for six weeks, then let it grow tall ferns to store up energy for next season.
