Do I plant in sunny or shady area?

What're the ideal growing conditions for romaine lettuce? I want to put them in an area that gets a few hours of good sunlight but mostly shade. Is that good for lettuce? Also, can I trellis the smaller yellow straight neck squash? Can I put it in a 20 gallon pot?

Full sun is ideal, but I've grown very nice leaf lettuce in morning sun only, in a raised bed under the canopy of a large oak tree. In those conditions, the lettuce won't grow quite as vigorously, but it will produce over a longer season, as the plants will be slower to bolt.

Thanks Alex. So what should I put in this area? Right now there's two type of flower & some grassy plants filling it in. All planted by previous occupants. I'm removing all of those, plus a dead bush or hedge of some sort. It just occurred to me but I guess more bush type things? A few things I want to plant somewhere are broccoli, green bean, orange bell pepper, jalapeño,tomato(in pots)carrots ,garlic, many herbs,yellow squash, cucumber,green onion, maybe zucchini.

I always place my containers of jalapenos and bell peppers where they get just morning sun, or lots of filtered sun. That way the don't wilt in the afternoon heat, nor do the fruits get sun scald. They always produce a nice crop from mid spring through frost.

What goes well in blazing sun?

Blazing sun is good for green beans, tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, yellow crookneck squash, Butternut squash, and of course, sunflowers. The leafy greens can take some shade, but will also grow well in the sun. They are slower to bolt in the shade. Eggplant did well in the shade for me last summer. I planted Little Fingers.
