Edible Plants for a Bog

Well, not quite a bog.

In one corner of my yard, where the porch meets Northeast corner of the house, the (clay) soil is pretty much always damp, and gets very little sun. Even weeds don't grow well there, and grass is a lost cause.

I'd like to plant something that will thrive in these conditions, and would prefer it be something edible. I'm open to suggestions, as I'm tired of this blighted spot.

TIA,

Tom

Other things to try for an area like that include parsley, watercress, bee balm and lemon balm (make nice teas) and leafy greens including kale, swiss chard.

skirret - perennial, edible roots, likes regularly wet feet. dunno how much it would like the lack of direct sun, though...

sounds like a good place for mushroom logs?

Water Cress came to mind. I have never cultivated it, but harvest it in the wild. Meadow Sweet, Comfrey, Marsh Mallow, Bee Balm Mint, may do well too. For a bush, Service Berry, Blueberry. Trees: Willow, Red Maple, Birch.

Skipper?

Taro and Giant Taro (Colocasia esculenta and Colocasia maxima) are great edible plants for that kind of soil. Also, Bananas! In Zone 7, you can have edibles if you mulch them. 'Ice Cream' is a hardy star and produces delicious fruit.

You got tons of great ideas, let us know what you end up doing with it. I love the idea of a banana tree with ginger and taro (elephant ears) around it ... very tropical and yet edible and useful.

Here are a few more ideas. Even fruit that say, "full sun" will give you a smaller harvest in partial shade / shade.
