Asparagus - why?

I've been growing asparagus in the same patch for over 30 years, still going strong, but I've noticed over the years, maybe a 3 or 4 year cycle, some years I get TONS of seed (female) and other years (this year) 5 seed pods total...anyone?
I started a compost pile, because I gardened. Now I find myself gardening, so I have someplace for my compost!!

Asparagus needs a pollinator. Honey bees do a good job. Was there any bees around this year?

Not every bed sets seeds every year. I can agree, but don't have a reason why.
