cleaning up on the way to next season (pics / vid)

Well here we are, or should I say here I am. Some of you southerners are still growing but here in Missouri it is just about over. I have been cleaning the beds and getting ready to prep the beds for next season, which I hope is better than this one. Though it wasn't a total wash this year it was a constant battle with extreme temps and drought. Good luck to you all next season here's to a record harvest in '13.

Lucy doesn't look happy with the garden gone we will spend less time outside together. But never fear we will still be together just doing other things.

Went back and compared that garden with the one in July. One or two differences, eh? That was fun, Gixx.

Even saw another video of the dog.

Are you sure that wasn't just a wind stirred up by Lucy that knocked all the plants down the other day?

Oh hey! My hearing isn't so great but I wanted to ask you about the Sandul Moldovan. Not sure if those were one of the plants you showed us but I remember you saying that you were growing it. It was the worst for splitting in my garden this year . . . just, too too much!

Your hearing and my memory are on the same level, not good. Yes it could have been Lucy she likes to run laps at full speed quite entertaining.

I can't really say anything about S Moldovan. It was in a row of plants that got hit with Curly Top Virus. One of 4 rows that didn't totatly die and was left to grow just ot see if they would do anything. Curly top is not contagious it is spread by leaf hoppers. But that row never really did much so I have no real basis to go on. But if it is a bad splitter it won't be coming back.

Thanks for the heads up.

You know Lucy's looking at you saying taking a picture of her from full height makes her head look big. I love that look on her face.

Great pics and video. :D

Curly top? I'm not very knowledgeable about plant diseases but I've seen that in my snap beans. Why it isn't more common around here, I don't know. There are certainly plenty of leafhoppers that live in the alfalfa fields and then come into the garden and mess things up.

You may not be able to be sure about the splitting with Sandul Moldovan from me. This was the first year to have that variety in the garden, in my quest for a good pink beefsteak. It was also just about the worst year that I can remember for splitting. Even the Big Beefs were splitting and that seldom happens.

I think I've learned that staking promotes splitting since the fruit on the southside of the plants much more commonly split than those on the northside. So, sun exposure plays a part and it isn't entirely soil moisture during an August with 1/8th of an inch of rain & a September with, officially, "a trace." No, we aren't officially in a drought since this isn't completely unusual here . . . but running overhead sprinklers in very dry conditions is a little hard on the plants.

Try some soaker hoses.

And yes Sandul Moldovan is suposed to be a good one, but there are so many new ones, not to mention new crosses I will be growing out next year. This just makes it easier on me not to bring it back, this year.

This is the first time I have or even heard of Curly top. I sure hope it doens't come back next year. It seemed to only effect the early plantings. Also in only in a certain area. Read up on them they work in werid way's. They even like plants that are spaced out more that tightly spaced plants or is it the other way around? LOL

Going to bed

Good luck next year Steve
