Some pics over the last couple months

My garden was pretty boring for most of the summer and I thought something was wrong. I think it was a number of things and I plan to do some things differently. I definitely think the weird weather had something to do with it. Also I think I need to fertilize correctly. As soon as I added some phosphorous things started to do better. NEXT year I am not going to plant some things. My honeydews always had a funny weird sour taste under the sweet. So prob not gonna do that. Same with the canary melons...but the watermelons were delicious and sweet! So I prob will do watermelons again but not the other melons. I still have a ton of melons coming in NOW (so late) but I'm guessing with the temps now they're not going to do well.

My garden is SUCH a MESS where the corn and tomatoes are planted. I just didn't weed or do anything in there for months because I put up netting to keep the groundhogs out. It also kept ME out. I'm not looking forward to taking down the corn and tomato plants and putting that bed to sleep for the winter.

The peruvian corn was NOT successful only because the ears came in much later than the tassels. Some did get pollinated so I got some peruvian corn, but only one or two and they weren't the best. Next year I am going to try it again. The sweet corn came in great, but real short.

Overall I can't be to dismayed by how the garden turned out. I can't wait to garden next year! :P

I am going to try growing some herbs and lettuce indoors in my "greenhouse" (front porch/sun room). We'll see how that goes....

Anyway here are pics from the last couple months.

The first figs:

A lot of peppers on one little plant. AND they turned color! My first ones didn't:

A harvest from a day. It was so hot the corn started to dry up. But still perfectly edible!

Beautiful! I love the still life with the swirly background and all the highlights on the fruit.

Lots of good learning... and incidentally your sweet corn doesn't look particularly short to me.

Delicious and very colorful!

I don't think there's ever been a year where everything works out, but it looks like a lot of things went well for you this year in the garden.

Thanks everyone! It was SO much fun. I am already planning the garden for next year! Got to put garlic in the ground soon too. I LOVE growing my own food. I've discovered the different tastes of things and things I grew that I wasn't too wild about before I like now!

Yes, isn't it wonderful!! Parsley is one of those for me. I never thought I liked parsley and started growing it just for the swallowtail butterfly caterpillars that like it. Then I discovered that garden grown parsley is completely different from the sprigs restaurants put on your plate, full of flavor and I really like it. This year I re-discovered garden celery which is also so much more full flavor, just intensely celery like. And I also love cooking with all those leaves...

Sad to see the season winding down, but I do have more fall planting to do yet, including the garlic...

January will be the beginning of seed starting for next year. Between now and then besides the fall planting and fall yard cleanup, I will be turning a lot of this year's garden products in to Christmas presents.

It is so much fun growing your own isn't it. And it tastes so much better than store bought!
My wife bless her heart is city girl threw and threw! When we got married 7 years ago yesterday in fact she was like why do you go to all this trouble to grow all this when you can just go to the store?
I said I will show you why tomorrow! I went to the store and bought a can of tomato soup fixed it and I made some homemade tomato soup for her. I did not tell her which one was which!
Of course she picked the fresh homemade stuff and ever since she has been out there elbow deep weeding and planting.
She loves picking green beans and has been asking me to put her a raised bed in so she can have her a bed she can mess with peppers in. She is the born again gardener she tells everybody about haw good things taste and how much fun it is.
