Saving seeds

Can seeds from beans and other vegetables be taken from the vegetable and used for next year?

GilkersA7,

Yes of course they can. Beans are pretty easy as are tomatoes and peppers. Those are the ones I have the most experience with. I did radish one year as well but they take two seasons. Cross pollination is something to be aware of as well. This can make the resulting seed erratic as far as maintaining the variety true to form.

Here is a link that lists many common garden plants that are suitable. https://www.seedsave.org/issi/issi_904.html

As a reminder, be sure to let any seeds you collect dry before you store them. I usually let mine sit for a few days in a sheltered place on a screen I made. And it is sometimes better to store them in paper bags, instead of plastic ones. Plastic bags can lock in moisture. Keep them in a dark place. Good strains of some plants can last several years if kept dry and dark. Freezers work good for storage.

Yes, Just Make Sure That They Are Not Hybrids Since They Won't Breed True. :)
