Can SVB's destroy cuke plants?

Woke up this morning and checked on the garden. 1/3 of my cuke plants and most of the cukes themselves have been attacked by some kind of pest.......all at once! I then noticed wilted leaves and stems. The stems were hollow and there was this gel-like substance oozing out of the cukes and stems.

I managed to catch one of the pests that was in a stem and it was about 1/2 in. in length with a very light greenish hue to it. It's head was somewhat dark in color. I'm pretty sure it wasn't a pickle worm because I've had trouble with pickle worms in the past, and they were almost transparent with black speckles all over them.

Any idea on what this could be?

Would this be the one:

squash vine borer.

I don't know about the gel stuff. Usually around where they enter the plant is sawdusty looking stuff. I know squash vine borers will attack cucumbers if there's nothing around they like better, but maybe you have some other pest.
