Onion maggots

Just as I was thinking to increase the number of onions to grow next year, I discovered onion maggots had ruined most of my shallot crop, a few garlic and a few onions.

Anyone ever have a problem with these nasty guys? Did you do any fall planting of garlic or shallots that same year? Will the brutal winter in Vermont kill them off or will they just come back next year?

I think they came for the shallot sets as that was where the worst damage happened.

Thanks jal. I also found this info: https://www.omafra.gov.on.ca/english/crops/facts/00-017.htm#Control

Hard to know if these were 2nd or 3rd generation as the onions came in so early as did the shallots and garlic.

I didn't notice anything when I was harvesting. I was checking the drying process and noticed over the weekend. boo hoo.

I think I need to get more info than I have and find out how I can grow again next spring - different location of course - and prevent tihs from happening again. Sounds like there are some prevention/control options available.

No Fall planting this year!
