re: zucchini

I live in b.c. in a zone 3b. I started gardening 3 years ago when my husband an me bought our first house. My problem is that the end of my zucchini turn a dusty colour and rot. I would like to avoid this problem this coming gardening season--does anyone know what this is and how to avoid or prevent it from happening?

When does this usually occur?

It sounds to me like you have blossom end rot on your hands but, I'd like to know when they start to rot on you.

Some things that you can do to aid your zucchini fruit is: Keep them off of the soil and top water them to avoid any splashing. Also, spray them with a 2:1 mixture of milk to water.

Also, as a preventative measure, lay out crushed eggshells in the soil where you plan to plant your zucchinis. I get mine from my house and from local restaurants that are more than happy to be rid of the eggshells.

The fruits usually start to rot when they are about 3 or 4 inched long.

you said to put eggshells on the soil where I am going to plant the zucchini--do I turn them into the soil or just use them as a blanket for the plant to rest on??

Hope to hear from you soon
