Garden Update & What type of Lettuce did I plant?

Hot Cherry Peppers are starting to form, my sunflowers are shooting up, and I have already had a bunch of salad from the garden and the lettuce keeps exploding. But I have a few questions:

1) Carrots, how do I know when they are done (signs, tips)?
2) Onions, same thing
3) See the dark dark green lettuce that almost appears to be growing straight up like Romaine. What type is that? I can't remember all the types I planted (red, green, oak, mesculin, arugula, etc.)

What is that dark green huge leaf lettuce?

Looking good!

1. Carrots and other root crops, you can take a finger and feel around the root to see is it has any size yet. Just move a little soil and take a look.

2. Onions, same as above. All parts of the onion are edible at any stage in its development. Pull one when you want some onion flavor. If you are going for dry onions, let them grow until the tops fall down and start to dry up, then pull them and put them in an airy spot, spread out, to dry further. When the tops are completely dry cut them off and store the onions in a dry place.

3. That dark lettuce looks like romaine. Again, lettuce is edible at any stage in its development until it decides to bolt and get bitter. Some gardeners like to pick a few leaves when they want some greens. I prefer to take the whole plant.

This is one plant of Black-seeded Simpson lettuce.

The dark green looks like a form of bib lettuce to me!

Thanks for that input and the love. I put in a bunch of lettuce this year and it is all doing very well. Last season I just cut the whole plant out but this year I have been bunching the leaves and cutting them. The arugula was already chopped once and is almost ready to be cut again. It's amazing how fast it grows back.

I have been griling chicken plain and bringing lettuce to work to make a great salad for my lunches. With a little good seasons and balsamic it's amazingly delicious.

I'll have to check the onions and carrots when I get home. They have been in for almost 60 days I would say.

Yes, I agree with James. A baby leaf romaine. Maybe Claremont or Jericho.
