Garden Tour

Things are looking pretty good as of early June. But we will see how well the garden fares as we head into the heat of summer. So far we have eaten green beans, onion, squash and tomato sandwiches.

I am trying to save some July weeding time by placing the black cloth material around the plants.

The rabbits got my first planting of beans (see dead vines on the arbor wire), so I planted in large pots. It has been a long time since I have grown corn.

Your garden is looking great. I am so envious you have tomatoes already! I would be interested to hear how the black cloth works. I used it once years ago and weeds grew right through it. :D

No doubt it is not the perfect answer, but I am not sure what is. I just spent three hours pulling weeds. For the most part areas where I did not have the black cloth, but I had to pull some from it as well. I find that anywhere I throw on a shovel full of dirt to keep the cloth in place, I have weeds.

I need to come up with a good source for mulch. I don't catch my grass clippings, not sure I want to put hay straw down, would consider leaves from the woods but that sounds like work. But then again, pulling weeds is more work.

I tell you what I used Preen in between my cucumber and different squash hills along with down the middle of my sweet corn rows, and I will do it again every year. I didn't do the tomatoes or peppers because I strawed them. It worked great, but some people that are into organic gardening can't use it I think. I just made sure I didn't get it on top of the hills or right where my sweet corn was. I put it down and then easily raked it in and water it so a gully washing rain wouldn't wash it over my corn rows.

I haven't had near as many weeds in those areas this year.
