planting peppers in 5 gal buckets?

I can't remember if I ever asked this before or not, but do peppers do well in 5 gallon buckets? I always heard that peppers like to be close together, but is it the plants themselves or the roots? bc I have a bunch of 5g buckets right up next to each other filled with garden soil from last year that I had tomatoes in, but they weren't quite big enough for tomatoes. I thought peppers would be bettr? what do you thinK?

thanks! changing the soil would be useless for me, only because my whole yard is infiltrated with fungus. it will get on the plants regardless of changing the soil. :( I have so many types of fungus going on it is crazy. :(
