Playground sand

Fri May 18, 2012 9:38 pm

I've got about 120 lbs of old playground sand that I need to dump out of the kids' sandbox. Is there any reason why I shouldn't add it to my raised vegetable beds?

Many thanks for your input...

Keep in mind that adding fine sand to clay soil will only make drainage problems worse. A coarse sand would be best.

Sand is great for growing mellons dump all the sand in one spot.

I have clay soil the only way I can grow good mellons is to dig a hole, fill it with sand, plans my mellon seeds in the sand.

I bought 2400 lbs of sand for my garden it helps loosen the clay. It helped the whole garden. The following summer I hauled 2400 lbs of crushed lime stone rock dust and crushed rockand tilled it into my 25x40 garden. It helped loosen the soil too. Wood ash also loosens clay soil too but be careful not to use too much wood ask it can make clay soil worse.
