Veggie Garden Updates!

Its been awile since I've really been on so I thought I'd show ya'll my garden. Go ahead and show off ya'lls as well!

This is my pepper/cucumber bed. I've got some basil tucked in there as well.
I know it looks like alot but I wanted to start with as many as I thought would fit. If it gets over crouded then I'll just remove some.

I woke up this morning and my dad put up the trellis as a surprise! It took me an hour to figure out that he had done it though. :P I'm not to sure about it cuz the fenceing I'm using isnt very close to the ground. I don't think he put it down far enuff. We put some tomato poles inbetween the fence and bed so they can reach the fence. What do ya'll think?

Looking great! I would go ahead and put the cages or stakes or whatever you are going to use, around your tomato plants now. Once the plants are bigger, it is very hard to add support systems without injuring the plants/ roots.

Actually I have more grass coming than weeds in my garden. Also having a bit of a bug problem. Somethings been eating the leafs of my pepper plants and my tomato bed is being over run with ants. Still trying to get rid of them. Also had a bird tear an intire pepper plant to bits.
My cucumbers are tellised. You can see it in the back of my first two pics.
I didnt think about mulching my tomatos. What kind of mulch do I use? The store I work at sells some red mulch can I use that?

You can use the red mulch which would be wood/ bark chips. But for veggies, better would be grass clippings, pulled weeds, green hay, and other greens.

For ant control.....sprinkle dry "instant grits", the ants luv it & it won't hurt the garden. It expands when they eat it & makes them go poof!

Sorry, duets, but the ants exploding stomach thing is one of those persistent myths. Adult ants eat nothing but liquids, they cannot eat solid food. They will pick up solid foods and bring it back to the nest for the larvae. The larvae then cut it into tiny pieces and basically pre-digest it, before they eat it.

Adult ants can swallow nothing but liquids. At the rear of the ant's jaw is a storage pocket. Solid food goes first into this pocket, and there strong saliva breaks it down. The ant swallows the liquid part and spits out the solids. The ant digests part of the food it swallows and stores the rest in its crop. Sometimes called a "social stomach," this crop is used to store food for other members of the colony. When an ant is hungry it strokes a worker ant with its antennae. The worker brings up a drop of liquid from its crop and passes it into the other ant's mouth.
