I've been wanting to try this for a few years and now I have the room. Whoa, do I have room for 2lbs.
They are almost to pretty to plant. This is 1lb.

The label.

The label is telling me to plant them 3" apart, in blocks of 4 rows 3'
I get the 3" apart. I also understand the 4 row block planting. What is the 3ft?
Anyone else growing flour corn?
Eric

OK, I know you are going to say I am a stuck record. Plant corn in rows 30 inches to 36 inches apart, and a seed every 8 to 12 inches. Why do I keep saying this? Because it works, for one good reason. Because the folks who depend on corn for their livelyhood plant this way, for another good reason.
Eric, I know you have grown corn before. Just do what works for you. Don't try to re-invent the wheel.
Hey two pounds will plant a big area. Good luck.

Trying not to re-invent the wheel James, just thought 3" spacing between seed was to close. I've always been in the 6" to 8" spacing. This year I can actually use my Earthway seeder. Let the corn plate do the spacing.jal_ut wrote:OK, I know you are going to say I am a stuck record. Plant corn in rows 30 inches to 36 inches apart, and a seed every 8 to 12 inches. I think the ground is still to wet and cold.

June 3, 2012 Update on Painted Mountain and Squash patch.
Adding up the the 3 different corn patches, I have about 500ft of Painted Mountain. The stocks are 2" to 4" tall and ready to be thinned. I'll be thinning to 8" apart.

Today, I added 153 squash plants to the 3 corn patches. The squashes are about 4ft apart in the corn rows and staggered row to row. They are a bit crowded, but I have a hard time wasting plants. The squash varieties are,
Acorn-Jester
Delicata-JS
Delicata-Carnival
Kabocha-Sunshine
Hubbard-Red Kuri
Buttercup-Burgess Strain
Pumpkin-New England Pie

The two largest corn / squash patches are out side the fence. Not sure what kind of trouble I'm in for. I may have to try James's radio trick or install a simple hotwire fence.
I'll post more as thing progress.

Anyone growing Painted Mountain or have grown? I'm looking for a little reassurance. I planted my corn on May 19 and 20th. It's about 3" tall. I've grown Blue Hooker's corn and some sweet corn, but have not really paid any attention to growth rate. Is 3" in about 3 weeks on schedule?
I gave the rows a little 10.2.6 Organic lawn fertilizer today and watered it in.
What say you
Eric

I've been growing Floriani Red Flint corn for a couple of years now. It has awesome flavor; best cornbread I've ever tasted !DoubleDogFarm wrote:Anyone else growing flour corn?

Like a lot of things homegrown... there is simply no comparison between fresh-ground whole cornmeal and the bagged stuff that is passed off as "cornmeal" from the supermarket.
Hope your Painted Mountain crop does great !!!
(I haven't grown that, yet)
