can I put any seeds in the garden yet?

I'm in zone 5 here in michigan. I'm sure were in for some more hard freezes and certainly a month or two more of frosty mornings. I'm anxious to do something in the garden. Can I put spinnache or swiss chard or kale or anything in by seed yet?

Spinach yes. Peas, carrots, lettuce, broccoli, radish, turnip, kale, cabbage and kohlrabi can also be planted soon. Maybe wait until mid March. I would wait a month for swiss chard or beets.

I planted most of the early ones already but didn't think of kohlrabi. Now where did I put those seeds? 8)

Of course everyone has a different micro-climate. The most important date for you to know is the average date of last frost in the spring for your area. I plant potatoes two weeks before that date.

Not much more to add -- mustard greens and arugula, Asian greens... Bread seed poppy, parsley, cilantro, chervil, Japanese parsley, leeks and onions. :D

Check out applestar's list of phenological signs for planting (I.e. signs based on the periodic biological phenomena)

it will tell you plant your potatoes when the forsythia blooms...
