Hailstone White - new favorite radish!

I love radishes to begin with, but my new favorite is the first time I've grown this year - Hailstone White!

Taste is crisp, very refreshing and on the sweeter side. You can let it sit in the ground longer than most other varieties I've tried, remains solid, not woody, not hollow at all, no matter what size. And I like the short foliage...

My next year's additions (growing for the first time), along with the usuals (Champion, German Giant and Cherrybell and now, adding this Hailstone White)

Japanese Minowase
Purlple Plum
Watermelon

What are your favorite varieties of radishes to grow?

Yes, they do like cool weather... Usually some of the first and last veggies in my garden during each season. Frost hardy too.

This one definitely high marks from me!

Great fresh, great thinly sliced with a simple extra virgin olive oil, sea salt, fresh cracked black pepper and just a tiny bit of lemon squeeze to elevate the flavors!

Or finely diced, chopped hard boiled eggs, fresh dill, fresh scallions, salt, pepper and sour cream - yum!

The only white variety I got is Icicle. I have purple plum and watermelon radish out there too. Thanks for the report maybe I will try them out soon.

Well, you surprise me a little, D.

Yes, I go for the German Giants and the Hailstones. (I've also got another white radish with hairless leaves.) The German Giants get of some size and the Hailstones do to!

It doesn't mean you have to wait until they are as big as a tennis ball, tho'! That's one thing I like about these 2 -- they will bulk up early and yet you can harvest them then or anytime over quite a few more days. They get bigger but continue to hold their quality like none of the others I've grown.

I'd like to try it too. The only white I've grown was the icicle and it was awful, bland and woody.

Purple plums were pretty good. Have not tried the watermelon radish yet, in fact I planted the seeds not long ago.
