How to decide what seeds to buy?

I have been doing some research on heirloom strains as well as store bought seeds. I have not been able to find a decent source of information relating to what will grow best under certain conditions and produce the healthiest plants.

All in all, should you buy seeds from a store, online, or find a particular fruit/vegetable you like that you have bought from the store and save the seeds for next season?

Thank you very much I couldn't have asked for a better answer!

I get seeds from store packets, store fruits/veg, and doing trades online. Doing trades online though has helped me get more rarer/uncommon stuff. I have not tried to grow any store fruit/veg seeds yet. Some times they can be hybrids. You just gotta be careful selecting.

I have collected seeds from tomatoes and peppers from store bought produce.

I think that's probably what I'm going to go with next year. I have a couple of jalapeno plants that I grew from seeds I got out of a jalapeno I bought from the grocery store but they're not doing as well as the seedling I bought from home depot/lowes.
