What happened to my potatoes?

I dug up the first batch of potatoes this morning. Half of looked good and some of them looked awful. There was a range of tiny black dots to something that looked like blisters. I was exceptionally hot this summer, but I had them covered pretty good. Anyone got any ideas?

Tell us about your soil, amendments and watering. Any manure added this year? How did the plants look throughout the growing cycle.

The plants looked great! Very tall, very green, lots of flowers! I thought for sure I was going to score big this year. As to the condition of the soil, I'm not sure. I didn't add any manure, but this is a newer spot a little closer to some 30' pine trees ie; lots of sap. Maybe that's the issue -- I dunno. What's strange is that only some of them looked rough. I'd dig up a cluster and everything looked good, but on the very next plant things would look rough.

I watered them fairly heavy, but it was extremely hot for about 2 weeks straight -- with no break.

It's been a rough year for the garden over all. My bean plants looked awful - producing lots of hollow beans and even the good ones tasted a little off. And the tomato plants turned into tomato bushes that took over everything.

Yep, this amateur gardener got his butt handed to him this year! :P
