Waterkins?

Hmm, planted Watermelon seeds, got some nice vines growing, and then some volunteers started-up in the same bed. We've already harvested some nice watermelons, when a couple started turning YELLOW. And after exploratory surgery.

They still smell sweet, and are kinda tasty, but seem, unusual.

I assume cross pollination, but any other ideas?

these are from the volunteers? what was in the area last year? watermelons are far enough away, genetically speaking, from squashes/pumpkins, that I have doubts there's any watermelon ancestry in those yellow things. (being pollinated by watermelon wouldn't affect the look of the fruit in any case, as it's a feature of the mother-plant.)

Those are from Crimson sweet seeds, we have harvested and ate about 4 others that were standard green with red flesh. Same vines about 10 feet further out.
