Pumkins cracking

This is my first try at a garden so really new to everything. I had 2 nice little pumkins staring to grow, and then one just started to dry out (I guess) and the other cracked open.? What did I do wrong? Thank you for any help.

First thought is that you both fertilized too much and then watered to much. Pumpkins and other winter "squash" will split if they grow too fast, the outer harder shell can't withstand the internal pressure. Next year back way off on the fertilizer and water more consistantly, if the weather allows it. (a heavy downpour you have no control over)

If it's cracked open, I seriously doubt it. Too easy for insects and rot to start with the outer skin open to the elements.
