I find something every now and then in gardening reading that refers to Club Root in Cabbage but it rarely goes into detail. One article said one should add Lime to acid soil but gave no precise detail so I have a series of questions.

1. My soil is clay but is that acid or not and should one add lime to it.
2. If one adds lime how much should be added?
3. Should one dip the cabbage plant roots in lime before planting out?

First of all clay soil can be of any ph. You would have to test the ph or have it tested.
Generally the soil has to quite acidic to have the problem. In the pacific NW we tend to have acidic enough soil to easily grow blueberries, yet I have not had the problem. If you have had the problem then by all means you need to add lime to raise the ph. How much depends on the ph you currently have. With clay soil working it into the ground might be a bit of a challenge. I have never heard of dipping the roots directly into lime, but if your ph is causing you problems then you might want to work some into the hole before you put the plant in.

I have only had clubroot once. I learned to not plant cabbages in that place. It is usually caused by a soil slime mold. Black rot is another fungal disease. Wet soils and humid conditions make it worse.

The only way I know to control it is to get disease resistant cultivars and to plant somewhere else.
