Funny pumpkin story...

Mon Jul 18, 2011 1:33 am

So we planted sugar pie pumpkins this year, just 5 (we're very much "a little of this, a little of that" kind of gardeners as it keeps the kids interested) But a few days after we put the seeds in, we had a HUGE rain and none sprouted. Re-planted and they are doing ok, but no pumpkins yet (first female flower fell off without ever opening).

Meanwhile, the yard is going to hell, husband has been having issues (pnuemonia, broken rib etc.) and what with one thing and another no mowing has been done forever it seems like.

So brother in law is over the other day to do the mowing, but he got to a spot above the driveway and below the garden and stopped. I went out to check on the garden and discovered why he had stopped....there is a 15' pumpkin vine in there!

Checking on it today and, as it sits now, the only pumpkin in my garden is on the plant that ran away....not sure what to make of that

Frank,

I'm being silly. Cinderella had glass slippers.

Fur-gold-silver in some cases. Maybe.

My pumpkins (2 plants I garden similar to you), have taken over... I had to carefully clip them out of the peppers, chives, potato's and lavender. They went everywhere they weren't supposed to go and not really anywhere I hoped they would.
I think pumpkins have a mind of their own....

You never know what you might find hiding here and there. Especially around my place.

Just make a ramp over the pumpkin vine and continue cutting the grass for now.

Sounds like you have it under control.

Happy pumpkining (is that a word?).

I think it's awesome that you have a yard that can hide a 15' vine. Keep looking! Maybe there's something else lurking out there.

   on the one hand, finding it was pretty cool, on the other hand, you can just imagine how tall the "grass" had to be to hide it....

In truth it is kind of neat, because our property is just a bit over 7 acres, we spent the first couple years after we moved in finding all kinds of stuff growing out there. :D
