Broccoli roots

I planted about 12 broccoli seedlings of which five still remain. The rest wilted, turned yellow and died off. The stem at the soil level dried out and was very thin, whilst the roots also died off, leaving just a central root. Does any one know what might have caused this? It has been very windy but I have staked where I can. The seedlings were only 4 inches high when this happened. Thanks if you can help.

Hi Marru,

It sounds like damping off, a fungal problem.

Check out the organic forum where I have posted several organic ammendments to infections of plants, I think there was one for damping off.
