Weird acorn squash

We're growing acorn squash for the first time this year. We live in North FL.
Some of the squash are getting bumps/rigged like shells and they are hard as a rock, even after baking for an hr, the outside is like a turtle shell. So hard we can can hardly cut it.
Not all of them are like that but several are. What's wrong with them??

Sounds like your seed was impure and you actually grew some gourds! That's very common, but disappointing when you want to eat them. Gourds aren't good for eating, usually.

Don't save any seeds from the oddballs unless you want to grow wildcard squash again next year.
