I have a small unused area of the garden (failed onions) and I'm considering direct seeding my brussels sprouts now and then digging them up and transplanting into my garlic/shallot bed after it is cleared out, but I don't know how well Brussel's sprouts will transplant that way compared to started in plug trays.

Any one with experience doing this?

I think that would work fine. I've moved a few brassicas this way before. Brassicas transplant easily; I have also separated two plants in one pot by pulling them apart in water. They wilted for a few days, but quickly resumed growing after that.

I just moved 6 this past week from a old cold frame that I changed to a raised bed. I had a small section with brussel sprouts and they are crowded now and some are a foot high. Wet the soil so some dirt clings to the roots and they plant great! I always mix plants in beds to plant later. Alwmost anything can be transplanted if you keep enough soil on the roots! I even plant 2 foot sunflowers!

They will move just fine.

I have a mixed bed of old seeds.......lots of stuff came up.
I have been moving the Kolrabi and they are doing fine.
TZ, when will you dig the garlic?
I've already started digging some up.....do you think I should wait on the rest?

My garlic is a ways from digging, I just cut off the scapes last week on one variety and the other is at about that point. The lower leaves haven't started to die back yet. The shallots are bulbing now and will be ready to dig in a couple of weeks. That should give seed-B.sprouts time to get big enough to transplant.

I direct sow all my brassicas. Then transplant them when I've pulled up the onions. Works really well for me.

Okay, I feel dumb but I can't figure out why y'all have to put these plants where the onions grew. If they are direct-sown, why aren't they left to grow where you put them?

Aw, I think I answered my own question. You must be sowing them close together, then transplanting to spread them out.
