Potatoes/onions in the Houston area

I have been wanting to plant potatoes and onions. When can I plant these in the houston area? Can I just take a store bought potatoe and wait till it gets the offshoots to plant in the ground?
And what about onions? When can I plant and how should I plant?
Thanks in advance

Store bought potatoes are usually treated such that they do not produce roots. Therefore the best results will be from tubers bought from a local nursery.

I'm not from Texas so, I can't give you any firm dates as to when to plant but, generally speaking you would plant the tubers in early spring.

Anyone from Houston, Texas who can shed some light on the situation?

(Where I live, SouthWestern Canada; I am able to put potatoes in the soil right now (prior to the freeze) and the potatoes come up next year just fine)

Oh yeah! You also asked about onions, they can be started from seed indoors in about January or perhaps February and then you can just transplant the seedlings into the soil in spring.

There are some really neat varieties of onion out there, so lookin the seed catalogues now to find some nice varieties to grow.

If you do a google search for heirloom potatoes, there is a great company from (Washington State, I believe) that sells heirloom potatoes in the United States. They have a plethora of varieties.

Also, check out the web to see if there is a seedy saturday near you. Always, lots of neat seeds and tubers to be found at Seedy Saturdays.

(Sorry, but I have misplaced my link to the above website but, it is easy to find.)
