Anyone want to talk peas.

In my strawberry post, James mentioned peas. Lets talk peas. :)

While weeding I noticed my Super Sugar Snaps have flowers. How are your peas doing? Do you mulch? What ferts do you like?

Holy smokes! Is that your present garden or a photo from a previous time?

My peas are about 4 inches tall. Planted early April. It has been too cool for things to grow very fast.

I have never trellised peas. I just let them sprawl. Lazy me. :) I do have a short piece of 4x2mesh wire fence. Maybe I will drive in a couple of T posts and hang that on and see how the sugar peas like it.

James, I just shot this picture maybe 30 minutes ago.

I can't remember if I post this picture earlier. I started these peas in the greenhouse. They were almost 6" tall when they went outside.

Oh boy, do ever want to talk Super Sugar Peas! These have been my most anticipated crop. I planted the seeds in my garden the beginning of April and they have done great, they are almost 4 ft tall now (I wasn't prepared for that at first). I noticed yesterday that there were a few flowers but now they are everywhere. I am so excited! BTW, I love your greenhouse picture, impressive. I wish I had one! Keep me posted on your "pea progress". lol

Sorry, I forgot to tell you that I do mulch at the base. I haven't yet used any fertilizer but I might. All I have used on them is Neem oil and some organic herbal plant food every 2 or 3 weeks. They seem pretty happy not being messed with too much.

Anita,

Your peas look great. Did you inoculate the seed? I did not. :(
What is herbal plant food?

Aorourke,

Can you give us a little more information. I see the peat pots. What type of soil mix? How old are the plants? Have you fertilized? How often do you water?

I actually made a post about it but havent had a responce yet. there is more info in there. Just thought that since there was another post about snow peas, someone might know what is wrong. Would you have a look at my post. I didnt mention the potting mix I used, it was a bag of mix used for starting seedlings, cant remember the make. Watering hasnt been consistent, a couple of time they have been sitting in water but only for a day or so, then I emptied the water tray. I've been watering from below for about 3 weeks or so. They have dried out a couple of times over the last week, since being back inside.
As I say my post say's a bit more info!
thanks!

No I did not inoculate them. I just purchased a packet of seeds and put them in the ground and covered them up. lol

I use an herb and vegetable plant food made by Bonnie Plants. It says "Organically-Based Soy Nitrogen" on the label. I got it from my local nursery but I found out that Lowes sells it in their organic section as well. It seems to be working great for all my veggies and it is inexpensive. I try to put it on at least once a week and then I mulch the base. I also add my used coffee grounds to my mulch. I'm not sure that helps but I have heard it does so I thought I would give it a try. Also, I play in the dirt around my veggies a lot. I say it's to keep it aerated but I think maybe I just like playing in the dirt.

What varieties do you guys grow? I'm growing:
Sugar Snap
Blondie (shelling type)
Early Frosty
Green Arrow (shelling type)
Super Sugar Snap
Dwarf Grey Sugar

Yum! Cant wait. :) I have to say, plain ol' Sugar Snap is my favorite from last year's garden. I hadn't tried Super Sugar Snap, though... Maybe that's even better. Lol! My peas are anywhere from 6 inches- 2 feet tall. No flowers yet, but I'm hoping for some soon.

Great pics everyone!
Taryn :)

Mine (sugar snaps) are in a new location with questionable soil although they look like they are doing well...the half of them that a rabbit didn't munch on.

I like to use 12-12-12 fertilizer.... because a 50 lb bag only costs $14.

Here in Colorado the weather hasn't been the greatest so my peas are rather short! How sad is that!! And no I have't done a thing with them. Am I suppose too? Next year I am planting my peas on St. Pat's Day if there isn't a bunch of snow on the ground.

wow, guess I was ahead of the game and didn't realize it. I have been harvesting peas for a solid month now at least. And AFTER the kids got done trying to eat more than I could save, I have frozen 3 packs for later this year. I am harvesting about a 4" pot full a day. Which gives me enough to freeze a pack every 2 days. (if the kids don't steal em). We had 2 days in the 90's and the vines seem to be hitting that panic stage where they throw out more pods every day trying to get a few mature seeds before they die.

The vines are about 6-7 feet tall and only a few have died. I didn't fertilize or do anything special. Just threw the seeds in the ground back in march. They have been very happy to be tangled together on my trellis. :)

I'll have to post some pics when I get home. Right now I am at the hospital about to have baby number three! :D

I started my sugar snap peas in my cold frame in feb and now they are getting small pods on ready to eat this weekend! I just converted my cold frame to a raised bed and left them grow. They are about 4 feet with tons of white flowers and small pods! I eat them ,when the peas can just bairly be seen and pods are 2 inches, I put them in salads and stir fry!

IMO the flavor on Sugar Snap peas is not very good until the peas are nearly full size in the pods. I made the mistake of eating them too early the first year I grew them and wondered why they tasted grassy instead of sweet.

Good to know TZ. First year growing Super Sugar. I've grown Cascadia. If you leave these to long, the skins get leathery.

Anyone growing shelling peas? I don't. Seems like a lot of work for less production / harvest. Maybe my ducks would eat the shells. :?

Frank, You have some interesting ideas. I'm a visual person, so pictures would be nice. Do you just remove the window and leave the box as a raised bed?

Ya that is what I o for the plans I want to leave in the cold frame.I usually thin out what I want to plant else where and let the rest grow! I sometimes add more dirt in may! As far as the sugar snap peas the name sugar means they are sweet at every stage. I eat them when they are babbies or the pea itself! Some of the smaller varities of peas are only good when they mature but not the sugar snap. Also make sure what type of pea you are growing!

My ducks would eat the peas and leave the shells. Had to lock them out of the garden if I wanted any peas.

Yes, I grow shelling peas. You can get a lot of peas in a small area. When the kids were home we did a lot of peas.

These are an edible pod pea. Forgot the variety. They are growing without a support system. I plant 3 or more rows ten inches apart. They just kinda hang on to each other and grow.

Those are beautiful looking peas! We love the sugar snaps, cooked pods and all. We do plant some shelling peas too. I like the big shelled peas in salads.

Mine are about 1.5' tall right now. I usuallyl use a support system but this year I might just leave them to sprawl, maybe. I'm pretty busy right now.

I made sugar snap pea pod wine last year. I'm drinking it now and it's very good!

The boy on the right looks like he hates peas, and a couple of others look way too excited about them.

Those two last pics are of past things. My current pea patch is the one with the small peas. Maybe they will make something, but they have a ways to go. There is three varieties there and I am going to plant some more to spread out the harvest some.
