When are turnips ready for harvesting?

I googled this, and it said when the roots are 2-3" in diameter. How am I supposed to know when this happens? Am I supposed to dig up part of the turnip? Will it be ok if it's too small and I put the soil back?

Just take a finger and probe down beside the turnip. Yes, it will be fine if you decide to leave it. I start eating them when they are golf ball size. When they get some size, you will actually see the shoulder of the turnip, and the roseate of leaves gets quite large.

I start eating when base ball size, some are still good later in the year.
This one was still good, just had to cut around the bugs.

Our cool climate is great for turnips.

If you live in an area that gets hot {80+} and you planted in the spring I would dig them up before the days get real hot.
Plant more in the late summer when the days are in the high 60's and low 70's.

Try them braised with mustard sauce.
