My 2011 Garden (Pictures)

I just want to share a few photos of my garden so far this year.

This first picture is a cauliflower plant that is getting close to harvesting. My cauliflower plants have been doing well this season. Cauliflower plants are supposed to be harder to grow than broccoli, but my cauliflowers have been doing better than my broccoli. Most of the broccoli plants want to grow straight to flowering.

The next two pictures are of broccoli plants.

I have a few Brussels Sprouts plants growing as well. If you look closely in the second picture, you can see the sprouts beginning to grow. The water is covering up most of them.

The big tangle of seed pods is a cabbage plant that flowered recently and now has seeds growing. I planted it too late last fall, it overwintered, and now it flowered.

The next picture is a larger area of my garden; there are mostly brassicas in my garden right now. If you look in the lower left, you may see some kohlrabi.

This last picture is of the garlic and onions. The onions that have fallen over are due to the wind we've had from thunderstorms.

Most of my plants are doing fine. A few days ago we had some broccoli, cauliflower, and kohlrabi with dinner. This was the first time I grew kohlrabi and we liked it. It has a mild taste with no bitterness.

Within the past week, we have had around 8 inches of rain. Between now and Tuesday, we are expected to receive another 5 inches. I'm glad my soil drains well so the plants aren't drowning in water.

Whenever it dries out enough, I will be planting the remaining crops for the warm season. I already planted some squash and tomatoes. I still need to plant okra, melons, and a few other plants. I also have a small area of corn. They are about 1.5 feet tall right now. I need to pull a few weeds as well.

With all of the rain, some of my onions are dying of fungal diseases. I hope most of them won't be affected too much. I had the same thing happen last year around this time.

Very nice.

Goodness! We had a bit over 5 inches in April, and that was way above average rainfall for April in this country.

It is fun to see your nice plants. Nothing wants to grow here, its been too cold. Maybe May will bring us some nice warm temperatures?

Welcome the the Midwest and the rainy season.

Good looking garden though keep it up. I'm hoping mine makes it through the flooding rains we have had.

I want to try Kohlrabi but as of yet haven't. The only thing I have eaten from the garden so far is lettuce.

Soon enough though we won't be able to control our gardens. That is what I'm waiting for.

My nearest NWS weather reporting station reported 13.26 inches of rain for April which makes it the 3rd wettest April on record. It probably would have been the wettest if today was still April. This rain has nearly ended the drought we've had since last year.

Thanks for the comments on my garden. I don't know if I can continue my garden at its current location after this summer. I'm a senior in high school and I will be going to college this fall in Little Rock, which is about 40 minutes away. The rest of my family doesn't want to care for the garden; I'm the only one who works in the garden.

Looks good ;3 I've had a bunch of really strong winds here as well, but barely any rain at all. It really worried me with my strawberry plants, being folded over by the wind, but after a few days, and some watering, it's doing just fine.
