Onion tops gone

I must have a cutworm or something. Not sure if rabbits
will eat the tops off of the onion.
I had 2 cabbage plants disapear to the stalk also.
1 question rabbit or cutworm the other question
Will the onion survive the attack.
6th year gardening at this location nvever seen this damage before.

The onions were setout from transplants on april 2nd
Height ranges from 4 to 6 inches. Around 500 plants out
and apx. 50 randomly through the rows attacked.
Did just find part of onion stalk today laying next to the plant.
LIke it had been chopped off.

shoot the rabbit, smell his breath, see if he's your culprit! lol j/k

I would guess it some kind of animal, not an insect. Seems like when I get cutworms it would effect a higher percentage of the plants than what you have. I would put out some more attractive "bait" and see if that disappears. If so, break out the box trap to relocate the critter.

I'm sure someone will correct me- but I think so. It might just send up another one?

I'm confused, were these seedlings or sets (small dime sized onions)?

If seedling, 4-6 inches seem very young -- I'm thinking no thicker than 1/16" and re-growing after losing the single shoot is questionable. But if they were sets, then I'm pretty sure it they will regrow.

My money is on slugs/snails.

They was grown from plants. I set out plants and set last year.
The sets had large greens and small onions. THe plants looked
small but the onions were huge.
Transplants are the way to go for good sweet onions.
I set out Candy and Walla Walla this year

Pretty sure the onion will survive. Well, that is if whatever ate it is apprehended.
