If you are growing onions from seed you will see they are long and thin seedlings with no bulb. They will stay like this for the majority of the season - although they will grow bigger. Then towards the end of their season they will begin bulk up to produce bulbs. With luck the bulbs will continue to grow until the top foliage falls over and lies on the ground. This is the time when you need to put a fork under the bulb and raise it a little in order to break the roots and ripen off the bulb. The fallen foliage needs to be organised so that it does not cover the bulbs and prevent them from maturing for winter storage.
