free topsoil

I never seem to have enough good topsoil or compost. I would imagine that a forest floor has just about the richest soil anywhere. So, I just went to a wooded area near the house, scraped off the top layer and filled buckets with it.

I guess I'm just proud of myself, but maybe it's a good tip for somebody.

I took a class in college how to grow plants I don't recall the exact name and probably couldn't spell it if I did that was 40 years ago. Most of the carbon and essential nutrients are locked up in the living vegetation, dead wood, and decaying leaves. As organic material decays, it is recycled so quickly that few nutrients ever reach the soil, leaving it nearly sterile. Forest soil sure does look nice and it makes excellent organic material to add to your garden soil. I would take a truck load if I could get it.
