Potting soil in garden.

I know someone that bought a trailer load of soil from the local garden center 2 years ago. They dumped it on the surface of their yard about 6" deep and planted seeds. Their garden is better than mine. Their okra grew so tall they had to use a step ladder to pick it. Bell pepper plants grew faster, taller and better than mine. Tomatoes did good too about equal to mine. Squash and other things did better than mine. I am going to buy a TON of this soil $35 and dump in it one location of my garden for okra, peppers, potatoes as an experement this year. I hope it works as good for me as it does them. The soil is black, it looks like composted saw dust with sand and white pieces. It is the potting soil they use to grow plants. I will build my green house later this summer and fill it with this soil too.

Plant roots go much deeper than 6 inches. Perhaps it is what is under that fake soil that makes the difference?
