Transplanted Lettuce this afternoon.

The garden is just plugging along, but still producing.

This was a perfect day for transplanting, overcast and drizzly. I pulled up segments of lettuce from the nursery rows and transplanted out.

Short rows of Winter Density, Arctic King, Freckles and Yugoslavian Red (not in the photo).

Here is a segment of Winter Density and my Hori Hori.

This photo is Winter Density planted out. Spaced 4" - 6" apart. It will have a low tunnel and Agribon covering it.

The last photo is Yugoslavian Red with the rebar, plastic pipe low tunnel.

Hoping to sell bags of mixed lettuce through December. Wish me luck. :)

I know that if I lived close by, I'd be buying some from ya! It looks beautiful...I planted my little seedlings into the garden today, too - but man it was hot!

EG,

Thank you. What did you plant today?

I'm in zone 8 are you also in zone 8 or 9 ? It's funny how different our climates are, even though we maybe in the same zone.

Eric - I planted about 5 different kinds of lettuce, swiss chard, and spinach. I have carrots growing in containers, and 9 broccoli plants in self watering planters (4 gallon)
I'm in zone 7b, and should have no problem getting everything to maturity before temps fall below their hardiness level.

Every time I plant lettuce of the heading variety, I get some nice greens, but they don't form heads. Usually by the time that they start to, the weather gets hot and they bolt. I think I'll have to follow your lead next time and plant some transplants. This means I'll have to start some about a month before I plant my seed.

That's a great pic of your whole garden...what a garden! Was it taken from on top of a hill or a roof-top?

I noticed that there is a water source on the right of the picture, do you get water from that to water your garden with?

Good gardening.

Looking good.
If I could get lettuce to germinate in August, I might get some fall lettuce.
This year I did have some arugula and mustard self seed and germinate about sept 1. It has given me some fall greens.

Here is a link about the water. Couple times a year, I water the garden with it. Should have some nutrition from the duck poo.

Jal,

Thank you. With a little protection, everyone could lengthen their season. Fall greens of any kind, are wonderful.

Such a nice garden! I was all excited to finally get a chance to work out in my garden, something I havent had the chance to do in a while. And of course the one day I get to the temps jumped up and any clouds are gone. Been perfect gardening weather all week until today. Hoping to get out there to start my lettuce and spinach and all the other wonderful fall veggies... Luckily here in California my season is pretty long...

Not *all* of California has such extended seasons. Truckee, for instance, has a five-day forecast which includes lows down to 25 deg. F from now through Thursday. Highs are forecast into the low 60s, but those lows will put almost all garden plants at risk unless they have one or two methods of protection.

Truckee is the town where Donner Pass is located, for those not familiar with the name.

Say, that's a pretty nice building.

I agree with the idea that the pond water would be good. Aside from the duck manure, I'm sure that there are also many microbes that would be beneficial in the garden, as well. Oh, and there are probably some trace minerals, too.

Lettuce is a great crop. It handles the cold very well even without protection. I planted some last year for a fall crop, and has lettuce past even a few snow-falls.

Good luck with selling your bags of mixed-greens. I bet they'll be a real hit.

Even in eastern PA temps are holding strong. Should be gardening into late november. The brocolli might actually make it!

DDF- Beautifull garden, wishing mine was more open like that.
